I apologize for not finishing my post on the Gift of Dyslexia, my intentions are to do several posts on this topic. The reason this topic is so close to my heart is that I have a child that is Dyslexic. I want more and more people to become aware of Dyslexia because you may know someone who has many of the characteristics and they have never been identified.
Here are some thoughts for you to ponder before I hit the subject hard......
A snapshot of Dyslexia.....When a picture is worth a thousand unreadable words.
Dyslexia is not a disease to have and be cured of, but a way of thinking and learning. Often it is a gifted mind waiting to be found and taught....Girad Sagmiller......In the Mind's Eye
"Dyslexia is a weakness in a sea of strengths" -Sally Shaywitz
Here are a couple of sobering thoughts about reading.......
If help is given to a child in the fourth grade, rather than in late Kindergarten, it takes as four times as long to improve the same skills be the same amount.
75% of students receiving remediation after 3rd grade, never read at grade level.

The Gift of Dyslexia
What do you think when you hear the word "Dyslexia?" Some people think it means when a child writes letters or numbers in reverse, others may think it means you have trouble spelling, others may think of only reading, writing, spelling and math problems a child is having in school. The International Dyslexia Association defines Dyslexia as a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
